Have small, tubular kind. Planning to make Emeril’s Mac N Cheese off of Food Network. All the mac n cheese recipes I’ve known used elbow macaroni. Do I have to? Why or why not?

  1. I like elbow mac, because it catches and holds on to the sauce so well. But I would think you could use just about any kind. Go for it, you may find a new way to make it that you can share with the rest of us!

  2. It will work fine! I have also used rotini and shells and they both work well too.

Macaroni noodles give the right cheese to noodle ratio.
If you use another noodle they might be too cheesy or noodley.
Use whatever you like and serve it with bread just in case its too cheesy.
If you are making baked macaroni and cheese then the bake time might differ. If its just stove top mac n cheese then it should be fine.

  4. you don’t have to. Almost all pasta, except those specifically labled as so are semolina. the only difference is the shape. Shells also work very well becasue the cheese gets inside it like it does with elbow macaroni.

  5. Of course not. You can use any kind of pasta you want. It works the best with small pasta and you can use shells, penne, bowtie whatever. I’ve even made a mac & cheese with spaghetti and it tastes the same.

  6. you could use almost any pasta you have on hand.

  7. Nope, you can use alot of cuts for mac and cheese.
Actually alot are even better then Elbows ie Tubetti
I think thats what you have.
    Use them, they’re great!

  8. I think it is all in the mind as far as what type of macaroni you have in any dish. If it is just you eating it make whatever you like. If people are coming over and you only have a certain kind, try it on them. If they say nothing, you did good.

  9. u can use any kind of noodles for mac and cheese

Elbow macaroni is perfect because it has a tubular shape and therefore holds the sauce actually inside of the pasta, making it more cheesey and deliciously moist. But, that doesn’t mean you can’t use any type of pasta- there are no rules- make the recipe with what you’ve got and it should still be great.

  11. my mom makes the best home made mac & cheese & she doesn’t always use elbow, but she does always use tubular kinds.
